How do I know if I’m eligible?

All graduating students who live and attend eligible schools within the Benton Harbor Promise Zone are able to receive the award. For full details and information, please visit our Eligibility Page.

What is the application process?

Students should apply during their senior year of high school. Applications are available here, as well as an in person interview with one of our coordinators in the Benton Harbor Promise office.

Do I need to fill out the FAFSA application?

All students who seek Promise scholarships must apply for federal student aid by filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. This determines if the student is eligible for need-based aid, most often the federal Pell grant. If you need help filling out the form we are more than happy to help.

How will this award work with other post-secondary financial opportunities?

Once the student’s total need-based grants (not loans) are determined, students will receive a Promise scholarship to pay the remainder of their bill for tuition and mandatory fees. The Promise scholarships pays the equivalent cost for a two (2) year associates degree in the State of Michigan.

What are the eligible post-secondary?

Any PELL-eligible community college or trade/vocational school in Michigan where a student is accepted.

Are vocational schools eligible?

Yes, any PELL-eligible trade/vocational school in Michigan where a student is accepted.

Can the scholarship be transferred to a private college or out-of-state vocational training program?

No, these funds are only for designated public community colleges or trade/vocational schools in Michigan.

Are there additional requirements that must be met after the initial award?

Yes. Students must make regular progress toward a degree or certification, be enrolled as a full time student and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.

What happens if the student fails to meet the requirements? Is the scholarship no longer available?

There is a potential for the scholarship to not be awarded for future semesters.

If the award is not needed due to other academic scholarships, can the award be applied to room and board fees?

No, these funds can only be used for tuition and mandatory fees.

What are mandatory fees?

Mandatory fees are those required to be paid by all attending students. This could include application fees, contact hour fees and fees which are course specific (such as lab fees for science and computer classes, etc.).

When will scholarship funds be available?

Funds will be disbursed at the beginning of your accepted school semester.

How long do students have to use the Benton Harbor Promise?

The scholarship provides up to two (2) years of tuition and fees for students. The student has up to five (5) years from the date of high school graduation to use his/her Promise scholarship award.

Are summer school classes covered by the Promise?

Yes. Students may use the Promise award to pay for summer classes if the classes can be applied to the degree program in which the student is enrolled. For specifics on classes or providing for a different college or school, please Contact Us.

How long will the Benton Harbor Promise be available?

The award is set to go on in perpetuity.

How is the Benton Harbor Promise Funded?

We are partially funded through the State Education Tax, however most funds are privately donated.
