Creating a College/Career Technical-Going Culture
Our new pilot program starts students off on the path to success.
The Freshman 50 (F50) is a new pilot program specifically for incoming high school freshman students, that pairs fun with academics. This program works with younger students to lay the groundwork for college and career technical education readiness, and ensure they have a plan for the next phase of their lives once they graduate from high school.
F50 is a collaborative academic enrichment initiative of the Benton Harbor Promise, Boys & Girls Club and The First Tee of Benton Harbor. With this team effort, the F50 program will work to help students progress academically and socially, to successfully complete high school, prepare them for a post-secondary program or workplace, and build a positive, supporting and fun student network.
With this program, students will be supported and encouraged to:
- Maintain and improve their academic skills with the help of experienced tutors
- Explore career options to find the right fit
- Practice for College or Career Technical Education entrance exams
As a reward for their hard work, students can participate in fun social extracurricular activities like movies, bowling, skating, tours of local colleges, organized games (Jeopardy, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, Pimp My Shopping Cart, etc.) and have a space to socialize with other students in a safe environment at the Boys & Girls Club Smilow Teen Center in Benton Harbor.
Students’ weekly time commitment to F50 will range between 2-3 hours depending on their academics and career interest. This program is held within the academic school year.
